I have a 55lb, 11 year old brown mutt of uknown origins who is afraid of thunderstorms. If I give her 3 of these when I know they’re coming, it takes the edge off enough so that she just pants a little but is able to just ride out the storm, so to speak. Without these, she is usually hiding under my feet or in my lap. These are also helpful at nighttime for her – she has allergies that make her itch and lick during the night, so 3 of these before bedtime seem to relax her enough so that she sleeps for most of the night without itching.

Out of desperation, I purchased both this Vet*Best Travel Calm and Pet Naturals Calming chews. I tried the PN product first and found it amazingly effective (separate review). I did not expect the VB to match the performance of the PN product but was happily surprised. I would judge their effectiveness to be about equal. All four of our pets accept VB without any trickery or disguise and the calming effect lasts equally long (at least 8 hours). The flavor/aroma of PN, however, is much stronger and our pets can go bonkers if they detect it ahead of being served. Strangely, the PN flavor/aroma gets muted when mixed in food (even dry nibbles) or water or when chilled. I had hoped to use the PN (especially the liquid formula) as a flavor enhancer for one of our pets who is losing her appetite prematurely. I am still looking for a super-good flavor enhancer or appetite booster. (UPDATE: See my separate review of CAT-MAN-DOO bonito SPRINKLES re: flavor enhancers). The PN Calming has an edge in COST per serving over the VP Travel Calm. The nominal cost difference is not great but PN ($7) has the edge over Vets*Best (vacillates between $7 to $11) but the VB serving size is twice that of PN (2 tablets to 1 for a 50lb or larger pet) so you get about 20 servings with each product although VB contains 40 tablets and PN has 21 chews. For smaller pets the PN chews have an even greater cost advantage since VB tablets do not as easily lend themselves to being divided into as many “bits” (or as evenly) as the PN chews. For the same reason, the PN chews also have a cost advantage in dosing for less acute stress situations or for pets that are not highly sensitive. In our case, for example, we have several 10-pound pets with varying degrees of jealousy/aggression/sensitivity issues. Lower dosages than the recommended levels have proven effective for these pets/problems and the ability to reduce the size of the “bits” has been helpful and a cost saver. Both PN and VB calming products can be used for cats and dogs, since the ingredients are not that species specific and the dosage is adjustable by body weight. PN uses colostrum as the main calmer and VB uses herbs and tryptophan. The liquid PN formula is more expensive than either of the tablet/chew forms. MSRP for the liquid is about $32 (3.8 oz) and even discounted runs about $18 and would have to sell for under $14 to approach the value of the most economical PN chews (for “large dogs”). So for now our “calming” issues have abated and we have a go-to product and a back-up. There are a lot of “calming” products out there and one may be even better than those reviewed here, so if anyone has tried others, especially alongside one of the PN or VB formulas, let us know: we are now calm enough to take the news.

SPECIAL NOTE ON DOSAGES: See my review of either RENAFOOD or RENAL ESSENTIALS for more information on the RELIABILITY (including label dosages) of supplement products.

    Works Great!, January 2, 2012

I have a 50 lb. mix breed puppy that could not travel in the car over 10 minutes without throwing up (even without being fed prior). We often travel to see family 30 minutes away and he can never make it without being sick. We booked a vacation home 3 hours away and I purchased the Travel Calm for him in the hopes he would be less stressed on the ride. I gave him the 2 tablets over an hour prior to departure and we made it to and from the cabin without him throwing up at all. I am so pleased with this product because now we don’t have to worry about traveling with our dog and he can be part of our vacations.
